A Theory of Abrupt Climate Changes: Their Genesis and Anatomy

چکیده

We combine our ice-sheet and climate models to formulate a deductive theory of abrupt changes pertaining Heinrich/Dansgaard–Oeschger (H/DO) cycles the last deglaciation punctuated by Younger Dryas (YD). Since they are all accompanied ice-rafted debris, we posit their common origin in calving ice sheet due thermal switch at its bed, which naturally endows abruptness these signals millennial timescale characteristics ice-mass balance. To distinguish H/DO cycles, differentiate triggers geothermal-heat/surface-melt inland/coastal ice, provide respective freshwater sources. surface-melt requires post-H warmth during glacial, but is already operative Holocene, DO encased within H cycle self-sustaining Holocene. They otherwise share same time signature, thus resolving this seeming puzzle commonality without invoking unknown forcing. The transcend produce observed sequence, calving-induced flux needs be boosted rerouting continental meltwater cause YD. discern key process an eddying ocean adjustment toward maximum entropy production (MEP), would melt H-induced sea warming followed gradual cooling that anchors form hierarchical Bond cycle. modelled anatomies resemble ones, may robust unified account changes.

Ice-core evidence of abrupt climate changes.

Ice-core records show that climate changes in the past have been large, rapid, and synchronous over broad areas extending into low latitudes, with less variability over historical times. These ice-core records come from high mountain glaciers and the polar regions, including small ice caps and the large ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica.

abstract reception environment has considerable effects on accepting a translation. as the expectations of a target culture and its values and needs change throughout history, its criteria for accepting a translation or rejecting it will change accordingly (gentzler, 2001). the expectations of iran, as the reception environment in the present study, have changed after the islamic revolution. i...

Abrupt changes and intervening oscillations in conceptual climate models

ANDREW ROBERTS: Abrupt changes and intervening oscillations in conceptual climate models (Under the direction of Christopher K.R.T. Jones) This thesis examines the role of fast/slow dynamics in understanding the mechanisms behind oscillatory patterns found in paleoclimate data. Fast/slow systems often exhibit rapid transitions between metastable states, and understanding these transitions is im...
